week 18 - it's over...

edit of material about bijenkorf christmas decoration

having worked only two days this week, i haven't done really much. i finished the edit of the video you see above. it's an impression of what happened intrducing christmas in the bijenkorf. tomorrw is christmas eve, so i decided to end my intership now, so i can travel to bochum on time tomorrow, to spend christmas with my parents.
also a little goodbye and christmas party was held for me, with cake, i got a nice present and afterwards we went to a bar and had a couple of drinks. that was fun.
only that i had planned to take the last train to gronau, which didn't work out that good. i missed it, and had to take one in the morning instead. whatever.
in conclusion, i am really happy about having done that internship. i learned really a lot, not only about working but about myself aswell. also i am sure now that a job like that is right for me an that my chice of studies were good. a more detailed report will follow!
merry christmas and a happy new year everyone!

week 17 - the end is near

promo for the film love actually

my internship is nearly over. that is sad. it was really great to work here. but i am aswell looking forward to seeing all friends at aki again :)
one of my last jobs was the sms promo above. its for the film love actually, and the whole film was given as material for it. making the edit was fun, and the graphics aswell. i did it completely on my own, auke only helped me fine tuning it a little in the end.
i also made another splitscreen thing and some bijenkorf pages, like last week, but that isn't that interesting i guess.

Sunday 14 December 2008

week 16

this was the week of the splitscreens. splitscreens is, when a show is about to start and people force you to see another advertisemnt before. so first you see a short trailer of a show, then the ad-spot and then the show starts. all in 20 secs. it's kind of new for hollandcentraal, because before rtl used to make them on their own, but now let a third party make it.
the only more or less creative thing about making such a split screen, is the short trailer. you have to make that ten second edit yourself, from the whole show. for the one above for example, the whole two hour film was given and i should make the trailer from it. the rest is just filling in the title, putting the whole thing together with the ad and get it on a tape.
i think i made three or four of these commercials this week. the one above is just an example.

Monday 8 December 2008

week 15

this week was busy busy busy. i worked on the bijenkorf-animations, but they stil aren't final so it's gonna be next week i guess.
also there was another promo for rtl boulevard to be made , what was my job aswell, because they liked the previous one i made (about that "body of lies" movie) so much, that they want all promos in that style from now on. that is good.
i thought it was simple to just pick the old one and change it little to fit the new topic, which is a britney spears concert in london, but it wasn't that simple. there was only extremely few material to make an edit of, so i had to fill nearly the whole clip with vector illustrations, to match the rtl boulevard style. but i am really satisfied with the result, and so is rtl. watch it above.

Monday 1 December 2008

week 14

promo for christmas episode of nigellas kitchen

christmas is about to come, or at least that's how it seems, because now we already got a lot of christmas assignments. for example the one you see above, a christmas-style sms-promo for the tv show nigellas kitchen. was fun to do that one. auke helped me a little with that one. biggest problem with that one were those bowls that stick in each other, expand, and go back again, because there was only one picture of them, showing them put together. thanks to my incredible photoshop skills i managed to recreate them apart from each other ;)
also there are new "bumpers" (something like trailers) for the upcoming christmas styling of the bijenkorf to be made. i already started with that, but i'm gonna upload the results, when they are all done, next week or so.
and then, end of the week something special i was looking forward to all the time happened, COMPANY OUTING! YYAAAAY!!
we were wondering a lot what to do this friday, but then we concluded that it would be the best to go to HOLLAND CASINO IN AMSTERDAM!! it was just great. additionally nils came along to visit hollandcentraal and joined in going to the casino. it was so much fun. paul invited us to the casino, we were introduced in black jack and roulette by a personal attendant, and had a starting capital of 30 euros in chips. just great. afterwards we went to eat togehther. great start into the weekend.

Monday 24 November 2008

week 13

video about to come

i started this week really nice. monday was the "NPOX Festival" (means something like "nederlands publieke omroepers crossing border festival"). it's a festival for people working for the dutch broadcasting television and radio, with a lot of lectures about for example new media, internet, and with dicussion rounds, and some other cool activities, like ...uhm... playing videogames and eating and stuff.
the reason for me to be there was that hollandcentraal had designed the forming of the whole thing, like posters, infographics and everything. my job was to film the whole thing, for hollandcentraal, to have a sort of registration of it for both archive and portfolio. i went there with frank and ... filmed. additionally i went to some interesting lectures about new "platforms" (media you could say) and there was a big party afterwards, with lots of free drinks and food. nice. let's just say i enjoyed myself.
the rest of the week, among other things, i made a short edit of all the material, trying to show most of what hollandcentraal had designed for the festival. it was not short enough so roy made the final edit and fine-tuned it. and that is what you see above.

Monday 17 November 2008

week twelve

you'd better not send an sms by now, it'd be going nowhere...

again a rather calm week. but new for me was, that i could help colegue auke with a sms promo he was making for some show on RTL. it's for RTL Boulevard, where the intorduced the upcoming film "Body of Lies". the show also included one of these sms-lotterys, and that's what we had to make the clip for. auke had already made a short edit from a trailer of the movie, and my job was to make a short animation at the beginning of the spot, about the trip you're able to win. that was fun. you can watch it above. i tried to copy that shiny RTL Boulevard look, so that the promo ebeds in the show.
i'm looking forward to seeing my work on national television :D

Sunday 9 November 2008

week eleven

hm. nothing too special this week. happens.
i mostly made some of the bijenkorf pages, but it's strangely calm for this time of the year. i guess closer to christmas that's about to change.

Monday 3 November 2008

week ten

making of "KUS - shaken, trillen, beven" - warning - LARGE file

the song you hear is what the video is for, you can see the result here

time goes by so fast here. really.
so, you could call this week the "aftermath" of last week. having shot the music video on friday last week, a whole lotta work results from that event. my main task this week was to edit the "making of" to the music video. it's probably just for holland centraal as a sort of recognition, but it's a nice job for me to do.
i also was busy with assorting the tons of photos i made at the video-shoot. i had to make one selection to be sent to EMI (sony music label, client), and one for the holland centraal family album, and of course, one for myself :)
for therest i did some of the usual stuff. pages and so.

Tuesday 28 October 2008

flashing around

obviously, i figured out how preloaders work in flash. andree told me it wasn't too difficult, and he was right. i thought it wasn't such a bad idea to make a higher-quality-flash-version of my showreel with a fancy preloader and stuff. the showreel below, small as it is in that blogger-quality, looked really poor if you ask me.
so now the showreel is not totally up to date anymore, but at least quality and preloader are. enjoy.
(only thing that is still bothering me are these upper and lower field stripes. must have done something wrong while importing some of the footage. again. next time i'll get it. - for everyone who doesn't know what i'm talking about: not so important...)

Sunday 26 October 2008

week nine

FashionFlash

low contrast due to compression...

Music Video Shooting

this week was great! really much nice things to work on. first of all this week, we filmed the bijenkorf oktober fashion flash was. every month the bijenkorf has somthing like that. it's a presentation of upcoming fashion for in-store tv's, you could call it some sort of moving catalogue. so on monday a model was there that we filemd wearing dfferent sets of clothes, in different poses. we did that in the office of holland centraal, they have everything necessary there to do so. light, camera, a treadmill... yeah right, a treadmill. they have that for these "catwalk-shots", like the model walking towards you and stuff. nice effect.
ok, so we filmed everthing on monday and i had time till thursday to make a montage of that. i tried to pretty much use the same style as in the catalogue itself. afterwards michiel added the text. the bijenkorf liked it and so did i.
and then came friday. after having done two music videos for that girl-band "lisa, amy and shelly" their managers (EMI, music label of sony), asked holland centraal to make a music video for "KUS", a somewhat more popular and further grown up group, and today was the shooting of their clip. and even better, i was asked to come and help! awesome!
the group consists of four nice girls from the age of about 24 (i guess), and the clip was shot in a big gym in amersfoort. that was one really great experience.
ok, most of the time i was busy carrying around lights and camera equipment, but having participated at all was and really good and informative for me. and one other task of me was to film the making of! so cool!
all the time i wasn't busy with carrying stuff around i filmed what was goining on, and if i wasn't filming, i was taking photos (brought my camera, naturally). i will also be the one mounting the making of, so the clip will follow as soon as it's done.
is also was one long day. a lot of work such a video shooting, that's for sure.

Sunday 19 October 2008

week eight

click it!

above you can clearly see what kept me busy this week. our account executive at the bijenkorf liked the countenance-clips i made for the three crazy days so much, that he offered me the job to make animations for the upcoming month theme. the bijenkorf has a certain theme every month, and for oktober it's "boys will be boys". i was given some illustrator files with graphics of cars, motors and other cool stuff that i shoud make some nice animations from. nice assignment i'd say.
i picked the three best of those files and started working on that. the problem with those vector artworks was, that they weren't made for being animted, they were only made for looking good printed. so i had to split them into groups layers and clipping masks in illustrator before being able to animate them. took a while, detailed as they are. and that created the next problem. i had only three days for all three of the animations. so i had to work the evenings aswell. but that's not that bad, if you work over regular time, you can eat on costs of holland centraal, and they make a good pizza on the opponent site of the street :P
my colleague auke also liked the graphics of the clip in the middle so much, that he wanted to participate in creating that clip aswell. so he made the intro where everything pops up and i made the sequence where the camera dives into the artwork.
it was really fun to do, and i am as happy with the results as the bijenkorf-people.
the rest of the wek wasn't too interesting, bijenkorf pages mostly.

Monday 13 October 2008

week seven

photo(shopped) by martina

anyways, this weekend including monday i went to visit enschede, as anounced in the earlier post. i worked last saturday, so monday was spare. that was good in so far, that i could participate at one twentse welle projecten pool meeting (some sort of school assignment that is). it was good for me to see how far everything already was, not having been there before due to my work experience. additionally, i could "help" by drawing some figures for my groups illustration. not that that help was needed, my group members anika and andree left some for me so i could take part aswell. i appreciate that.
i also could help the group of the modern times (anke, martina and daniel) with their project a little. before i already ha played a little role in one of the movies they are going to present in the museum, and they needed some additional photos for that. i liked helping them, was fun. the photo above is for a part of their exhibition.
back i hilversum i had a quite untroubled week, ok except friday, later more about that. on monday i helped my boss, paul, a little with shooting a short scene for a commercial. i only did some lighting and stuff, and the scene was really short and done fastly, but i was nice to help. it was for a commercial about "mooi" (dutch for beautiful), a chain of makeup-stores.
this week i also learned how to "dump" movies onto digibeta tapes. digibeta is the most-used system for TV. might come in handy though.
and then came friday. on firday it was my job to record a digibeta tape with a short clip someone had made the day before, who i promised i would help him out with that. he wasn't there that day. i should just grab a rendered file he had started to render the day before and record it onto the tape. sounds simple.
what happened was, that his computer crashed over night. the file was gone. i didn't have his account data to log in and render it again, and some other things went wrong.
it took me the whole day trying to solute these problems. afterwards we even had to record it two more times because somthing with the sound was wrong. in the end we were half a day over the deadline. stress pure, but again i learned a lot of that: finish your stuff on time, YOURSELF.

new sound

hi. difficult story. i only used the sound in the older version of the animation below, because i hadn't found better music. i wanted someone from the conservatorium to make my sound, but time was short and they seemed quite busy, so i searched one myself and with some help from nils i found one that i liked pretty much. the one below though.
BUT BEFORE, desperate as i was, searching for someone capable of making high quality sound in a short time, i hung a paper with the text "sound needed urgently" and my email adress into the hku, the hogeschool voor de kunsten utrecht (there, because i am still doing that internship mentioned in an earlier post). luckyly, Jacob van de Water found it and made this fresh new sound especially for it. he did that in a really short time, two days i think. he did a great job, i have to admit, nice working with him. he started with that on the monday in the week before the opnening, and i, not being sure that someone would be taking care of the sound, picked the other one on sunday before. that's why there are two. pretty confusing right?
if you didn't get it just forget it it and listen to the new, better sound.

Tuesday 7 October 2008

sorry for having been absent. here's a reason.

hi. i am really sorry for not having posted anything for so long. it's not like, i didn't do anything, i just did too much. i mean doing an internship is good, but it also is like a job, and takes the same time like a job, like 9 hours a day and stuff. ok, i could have blogged, if there wasn't what i posted up there. i, still taking part in the twentse welle assignment, had only the weekends, evenings and nights to work on my precious animation, which i tried to finish as good as i could. i really didn't sleep much the last weeks, and only concentrated on my two "jobs". i really didn't like the thought of doing ANYTHING ELSE in the mean time. japp. that's it. hope you like it at last.

Sunday 5 October 2008

week six

the time for the "twentse welle" assignment is running out! now, so short before the museums opening, i have even less time, due to the "three crazy days", that caused hell of a crazy week for me. "three crazy days" is the name of the bijenkorf's year's biggest sales-promotion, what obviously causes a lot work for holland cantraal aswell, being it's main client. and so a lot to do for me to do aswell, but not that it bothers me or something, on the contrary, some of the assignments were really fun to do. i have made a flash-compilation of some of the clips i made while the three crazy days (my favorites you could say).
the upper three are a sort of trailers, that were played during the three crazy days. the one in the lower left corner aswell, but that one was played before, including the text. the one on the upper right wasn't made by me, but i thought they belonged together somehow. what i consider special about them, is that the only given content for creating them were three photos. unlayered. just flat tiff pictures. so, they had to be cut apart before, layered, and then in such a way, that you had to add some background, that wasn't there, to make it look 3D. sounds complicating, and that's what it was. took a while. then it was animted with some camera movement in after effects.
the row in the middle was fun to do aswell. the assignment for me was to do something nice for the bijenkorf's employees, that would be shown in the cafeterias and stuff. no matter what. just some ideas of nice countenance-slogans. so that's what i did, something nice for them.
because these days also found place on saturday, i had to work that day exeptionally, too. me and collegue ha to prepare some scedules and "last-minute-pages" the whole time during these days. crazy week though.
good about that is, that therefore i have a free day on monday, and i'm planning to visit enschede to see i if can help at the twentse welle someway. looking forward to it.

Sunday 28 September 2008

week five

there weren't many diferent tasks for me this week. on monday i jumped in for frank by making a small adjustment in a webflyer he made for the NPOX festival. the layout is a lot about text-balloons, and the client wanted some additional, special balloons to be added to that weblyer, and because frank in the aki to teach people, i did that. it's one balloon with a crown and text about the NPOX-Price, and another triangular one with "work in progress in it", like a sign (UPDATE: they even made it on to the official website and some posters by now, a bit down the site on the left). i like the layout a lot, so it was fun.
i spent the rest of the week with preparations for the "drie dwaze dagen" (three crazy days). a big special offer campaign that finds place at the bijenkorf every year, from 2nd till 4th of oktober. this year is 25th anniversary of this event, so it's gonna be big. i worked on some standart "pages" for it, but also i made two of three "bumpers". bumpers are short films that illustrate the whole event, like trailers for it. i'm gonna present them with some additional stuff i made after next week, because there will be a lot more when those three days are over i presume.
work is getting pretty tough these days, because i have to spend all (AALLLL!) my free time working on my animation for the twentse welle, and helping with the illustrations whereever i can. i won't complain, i should have known.

Sunday 21 September 2008

week four

before starting with my internship, i arranged with my current boss that i would get one week "holidays" at the beginning of oktober. i did so because i thought that this was the time when the preparations for the exhibition in the twentse well would start seriously.
anyways, i went to enschede/gronau for one week therefore, trying to help with the preparations. i should better have picked one week later, because then icould have helped with the actual constucting, but it wasn't for nothing either. this way i helped a lot with modeling for my groups illustrations. that means i posed in a lot different poses, was phootographed and lateron outlined and painted over in illustrator. above some examples (farmer illustrated by anika, nazi by me, AND i have to say that it's a historical museum, and that is the only reason why i'm dressed like a nazi). brought my group a whole step further i think.
it also was nice seeing my flatmates and people.

Saturday 13 September 2008

week three

i started this week with a typical "let the work experiencer do that"-job. making a logo for the neighbour from the other side of the street. he runs some ink-crtridge shop and want's to expand to "recyle-point". for ink-cartridges i guess. so i did that. worldshaking.
the rest of the week i mostly made these "pages" for the Bijenkorf instore-tv. above you see a typical example for one those pages. for generating them you mostly use templates. sometimes you have to exempt photos. not so thrilling.
i also sorted out some of the last weeks photos, from that bijenkorf-presentation, because some people there wanted have them aswell.
i also helped a by adjusting a "promo", a short spot for some tv rogram where you can win something.
oh, and i started editing a short report about the opening of a new restaurant in the amsterdam department of the bijenkorf. it's supposed for the employees of that enterprise to be seen on the internal website. i like that, i am fond of film editing.

some good news about my lodging: i have advanced from caravan to a room in a shared house yesterday! if that goes on weekly as in did, i'll be living in a palace when i end my work experience. it's nice, i share this story of the house with students only. they study at the hku (hoogeschool voor de kunsten utrecht), and they are really friendly. everything shared is surprisingly clean, good flatmates therefore. only on the upper floor it's not that tidy, there live some polish workmen, like in most shared houses here, and they don't really seem to care. anyways, i'm happy. only missing some furniture.

Sunday 7 September 2008

week two

- Bijenkorf-selection of the photos

this was one busy week for having started only the week before. on monday i was at the beehive headquaters (beehive is what bijenkorf means) again to prepare the rest of the presentation for the big management meeting on tuesday. among other things i cut and assembled an interview for that. i like that.
because having worked prety muh for it, i was allowed to join the big meeting on tuesday, what i did with pleasure, even if that ment having to stand up early. the presentation itself wasn't that interesting, a lot numbers and schedules and stuff, but the place where it found place and the effort spend for it were definately worth looking at. a very stylish building (ok, only the interior) with a lot of nice rentable rooms. there also was free food ;)
the photos above were taken there.
the rest of the week i could help roy (ex aki student working there) with a musicvideo he was working on. it's for the dutch children's girl group "Lisa, Amy and Shelly". not exactly my favorite type of music but well nice having participated there. my tasks where mostly keying stuff, and i also filmed some background shots together with paul, my boss. the scene where the one girl pretends jogging in the woods, about half the clip's length, is done by me.
by th way, i changed my current lodging. i went from tent upwards to caravan! not that i dislike my tent, but it's slowly getting cold and a real bed is nice aswell. so i rented a stationary caravan at the same camping site. here i have everything i need, even internet. a large step forwrd on my way to a room.

Saturday 30 August 2008

week one

if some people missed me at the aki, that is because at the moment i am doing a "work experience" (zu deutsch "praktikum", en in nederlands "stage") at holland centraal. that is a small but fine motion graphics and concept design agency in hilversum, NL. six firendly people work there regularly, and mostly they have one or two "work experiencers" (??? no idea how to phrase that). one of their main clients is "deBijenkorf" a great dutch department store chain (they do all that in-store tv and stuff), but they also work a lot for tv or make musicvideos.
the office they have is great. a nice piece of architecture, and it was created by someone who was still studyig at that time, really remarkable.
i have to admit that i find it pretty adventurous here. going to some foreign country (ok, maybe not that foreign to me) completely on your own without knowing anyone, just to work there and see how it goes. what is even more adventurous is my current doss. i wasn't aware, that it is SO hard to get a room or something here, and maybe didn't start searching early enough (like a month before starting). that is why i didn't have a place to sleep when i came here, but i found an easy solution. camping. in my free time i do it for fun, so it's not that bad. additionally, the camping site where i've put up my tent is only 15 min by bike to work.
enough about the local circumstances. the first week was pretty easy, first of all i should get to know the way of wor here. so i was told a bit about programs, structures, styles and stuff like that. also i had a look at some work they made, and checked what clients they work for. michiel, works quite a while here i think, most of the time helps me and shows me around. he does most of the work for deBijenkorf, so that is what i will mostly work for too, i guess.
later that week i already did some actual work, making some "pages" that can be seen in the stores of deBijenkorf. they call these short films, that inform you about special offers and things, so. in addition i helped by preparing a presentation for a big bijenkorf management meeting, some sort of information event about the upcoming season. for that i went to the "DeBijenkorf Headqauters" in amsterdam (not as spectecular as it sounds) toghter with michiel.
a bit difficult for me is that i am taking part in the twentse welle projecten pool assignment for aki aswell, what brings me some extra work hours in the evenings, and eats up this weekend (and the ones following aswell i guess). but i like the assignment and want to finish my animation as good as i can.

Sunday 17 August 2008

showreeeeel

this is a cmpilation of most of the videos and animations i made up to now. used it for applying at the agency i am going to work for as a trainee the next four month. it's "holland centraal", where a teacher of mine is the senior motion graphic designer. i'm really expectant :)
PS: i'm gonna upload it in higher quality when our server is available again.

Friday 13 June 2008

3 places

for this assignment, we should go to 3 different places and concentrate on the feelings we have there. the places should be somewhere outside, in the nature or something, somewhere in the public, for example a suermarket and in our own room. we should then make photos that illustrate the feelings we had at those places.

Thursday 12 June 2008

tamtam final

it's new and it's fresh. i reworked the tamtam-animation, and combined the ideas i had in the earlier ones. this time i did it in afteeffects to include some 3d-movement.
i also included sound, but i'm not really happy with it yet.

Monday 26 May 2008

frame after frame after frame...

same topic as in the post before. strange humans.
i really liked doing this, even if it wasn't an assignment and a whole bunch of work. every frame you see is drawn by hand (with my wacom tablet and flash). there are only few loops in and only one motion tween (the falling leave). the rest is really drawn frame after frame after frame...
each time i'm doing something like this, i love seeing how the things come to life. i also like the style of this kind of animation, has it's own flair somehow.
it's not the final version, i have to rework some timing and the sound. i thought about asking someone from the conservatorium to record unique sound for it. yepp, i have to do so...

Friday 23 May 2008

tekenlab

this is something i did for the "tekenlab", some kind of illustration workshop i am following weekly. i like drawing and i like showing people how stupid and primitive we humans are.
the black frame is only for you to see the borders, which would otherwise melt into the white background.

Wednesday 21 May 2008

tamtamagain

the same idea as last time, but a bit more dynamic.

anothertamtam

i talked about the tamtam animation with some teachers and we came to the idea, that you could do a lot more with the typography. if you put the both t's together they make a nice form.

Saturday 17 May 2008

vvnr logo

vvnr mean "vereniging vrienden van de nationale reisopera". it's the opera we already made this poster for. we should now think of a logo for it's friends association. i wondered what the connection between the opear and it's frinds is, and came up with the curtain-idea. i wanted it to look a bit abstract, but i hope you still get it...

Sunday 11 May 2008

ITS another one!

ok, i think that's it now. i've talked with my teacher about it again, and we came to the conclusion, that if the text would look ripped off the bottom it should be better. so i did it. additionally, when i print it i'll really rip the bottom off i think. we'll see.
anyways, me and also my teacher are really satisfied with the result.

Monday 14 April 2008

ITS back again

i have changed some things about the poster as you see. it should look like the hand has ripped off the top of the paper, but i'll have to put in an other background. some kind of metal, that looks like the back of such a box where posters are put in should do it, now i'll just have to find and photograph something like that. perhaps i'll just print it, rip off the top, and then take a photo of it again. i'll think about it. update to come!

tam taram taram taram taram tamtam

logo and animation of that for a fictitious news agency called "tamtam". i wanted it to look serious, fast, new and reliable. everything you would exept from such an agency.

Wednesday 9 April 2008

tamtam

we should make a logo for a news agency called "tamtam". these are some ideas and the final logo, the square one.

Monday 7 April 2008

ITS in progress

this is the poster i created for arjans assignment about the "ITS Festival", the "international theatre school festival". i did it with the self timer and a bit photoshop, obviously. it's not the final one but there's not much that i'm gonna change about it, and so it won't take long!
i liked this assignment because you could think of something a bit more crazy and be free about waht you do for it.

Saturday 5 April 2008

opera in a suitcase

in the "projectenpool", where we work for different external clients during our studies, we got an assignment from the "nationale reisopera". it's an opera, that travels through all the netherlands and performs vaious operas.
ok, we don't work for the opera itsself, but for it's friends association. and for the start we should make a poster about how we see the traveling opera.
i prepareted a suitcase so, that if you open it a cardboard opera-scene folds open. so it's an opera you can travel with.

Tuesday 18 March 2008

bubblebub

in the tuesday evening "flash-for-freaks" lesson, we were shown how to create a simple movie, which seems to never end without looping. you could watch it for hours without seeing the same consatallation of bubbles twice, and additionally, the file is only 7kb large. with only the white backgrond i considered it too boring so you can click it for the fancy 70's mode. yehaa!

return of the polat

yes, yes, yes. once again it was time for a new, fresh photography-workshop under the supervision of the famous ahmet polat (he's going to exhibit in the moma in new york 2012. or at least he said so...).
i liked the workshop from the last year really much, because we were able to choose our own topic and try out new things, and ahmet helped us by saying helpful stuff. this time it was pretty much the same, but we should go for "necessity" and "authorship". the only bad thing was, that we were so many people and ahmet did not have so much time for inividual talk. but i still could try around a bit and photographed analog with my medium format camera, which i did not use for my studies up to now. it was a good experience, and i learned a lot about photographing analog with medium format, especially, that i should not let the negatives get developed at "procolour" in enschede. they looked screwed afterwards. i had planned to also make the prints analog aswell, but i couldn't, because they were so dirty and full of dust after having given them into the hands of those pro-idiots. i had to scan them and photoshop most of the dust out. took quite a while. but i did not remove all, so you can still see it's taken analog.
the great thing about scanning them is the huge quality. the scanner in the aki makes up to 9000 dpi, and that makes a ridiculously high resoluted picture. i scanned mine with 4000dpi and got an 8538x8538 pixel picture, which is 200mb large in tiff format. and it still is incredily sharp, because the camera isn't that bad. with a hasselblad or mamiya you can shurely get great results.
my idea after having talked with ahmet about it was to photograph different forms of necessity with symbolic pictures. we should then pick one of ours to be printed A1 and be exhibited with the others. i picked the top one, because i really like the picture, and i can still make a nice series from the others because they match each other pretty good i think. i'll take some more similar pictures to make a bit longer series than just two. already got some ideas...

a series about structure

over the last holidays i was in newcastle upon tyne for visiting my sister, who is making an exchange semester there. she's studying "spatial planning" (i hope that is the right translation for "raumplanung"). i have made a LOT photos there , like i always do (you will soon find some more of them in the studivz), and have now made a selection of them about one single topic, which is structures. or sufaces. or textures. whatever. i had started photographing different surfaces there an thought i could perhaps make a nice little series of them. this is what came out.

2 improved

i thought about the 2-poster again, and i think like this it's even better. it's not that obvious (still very obvious, but not so much), and you have think about a little longer. aditionally it looks better regarding the shape i think.

typoposter

these are two posters about typography i made for an optional assignment. there were different keywords we could choose to make posters for, i chose "silence" ("stilte" in dutch) and "2".
i chose to make the like contrary of silence, and then placed the word in all that rummely text to mark the place where the silence is. about that.
for the 2-poster i liked that you only see so few of the letter itself but you stil know emmediately what it's about. simple.
i think they look best printed large on that nature-white paper. black prints on broken white always look great.

Jazzz

this was for the same assignment as the dialogue, further downwards on this site. we got the sound (which i had to extend x3 to fit to the movie) and should make something for it. usually we should have used aftereffects for it, but i did it with flash. it has some nicer functions for directly drawing in flash with a pen tablet, and because of it being vector based, previewing and exporting the file works a lot faster than in afx. but even with the program working faster, it was whole lot of drawing and keyframing. i'm quite satisfied with the result. jazzy.

Leiber & Stoller

making this one was fun. i completely animated the movie in flash, and if you know flash, you will know that that's a bunch of work then. but anyways, i had my fun doing it, and i guess you can also see that in the movie. the assignment was pretty free, we should make an animated moodboard for "leiber & stoller", and what or who that is, we could think ourselfs. for me they're the new special force from the public health department.
i finally managed to get the sound sticking to the film aswell, by using the "stream" function in flash. when i first tried that the quality went down, but that was just because i was exporting it the wrong way. now it is absolutely finished. i'm so happy.

medium format camera

i've bought this beautiful camera on the internet (the camera on the picture isn't actually mine, but it's the same type). it has one of these viewfinders with a focussing screen you look in from above, and you can easily adjust exposure time and aperture, and it has a self-timer, i have a flash for it you can mount it on a tripod, it makes nice 6x6cm negatives and it has everything you would want from a medium format camera. ok, watching other medium cameras it probably isn't the best, but anyways it's a good access to this kind of photography and is good to learn how to handle these cameras. and additionally, i got it for 21€+7€ dispatch in good condition! what a great deal, the first time i got something useful on ebay!

new computer!

about my computer. the bad news is i've given up hope of repairing it. it would be too expensive, and it is too old for that. the good news is, i've already ordered a new one, the one you see above from zepto.com. it's a really good one and i finaced it with some christmas-money, some saved money. i thought aout buyin a mac, but this one has a lot more power and still is cheaper than medium macbook. i think this is gonna be good. the other bad news is, that it probably not be delivered before the werkschau. not good. i was so looking forward to working at home again and being just as productive as with my good ol' laptop... i'll have to work in the aki then.
update: it's here and it's great! hello productivity!

zoom with motion-blur

i made this for fun after having discovered sven's amusing secrets. it really was in the picture and i found it only coincidentally. click anywhere in the picture to find out what i mean!
i had to lough out loud after seeing what's in the picture if you zoom in a bit. i think it's great what you can discover in pictures from a 10 million pixel camera, it's really funny sometimes.

camouflage ver.0.1

a moodboard for a new ficticious fashion label by vivienne westwood. i first listed up what it's all about and then ended with a short video giving the impression of which direction to go for the label identity. it's still a it sketchy and i'll have to change a bit.

dialogue final

i reworked the dialogue. looks not that different compared with the first one, but i thing the typo ist better and i also deleted some other bugging stuff. looks like not much work already having that first one, but it was. i had to place every single word new after changing the typo and make it reveal again. that was stupid. but now it's finished and i am happy with it. yup.
uploading it with blogger didn't work so i put it on youtube.

toilet portraits

as the name says, these are portraits of my toilet. simple. it was a mixture-assignement of the packshots we did very early this year and the portrait assignment i'd say. the photos should be nice somehow, and special in a way. additionally you should show your toilet as you see it. i'm really happy what the photos look like, though it was a real mess in the bathroom after that session. there is not too much photoshopping in them, they already looked pretty good, right out the camera.
see what i did and make your thoughts...

masks

this was a rather difficult one. we should pic the photo from the last assignment the "depth" one, and make another one, creating a series with the first. not that bad you could think, but the new one should together with the old one give it a completely new meaning, but it should still remind you of the first. and if possble the new meaning should go in the oposite direction of the first.
with these masks, i wanted to say, that there are no real differences in the minds of different peole, like you can interprete from the older photo. the new one should tell you, that everyone is the same in the end, and that everything else is just acted.
technically i made it like the one before to have it look the same.

depth

after the assignment about "colour and space", we got another photographical assignment, this time about "depth". our teacher first of all told us two stories, one about spacial depth and one about the depth of the human mind. so, we were able to go in all directions by soluting the problem of illustrating depth. i liked the idea about the depth of mind, and wanted to show that only through small differences in the mind, a human being can develope in every direction. only by a tiny split, two completely persons can emerge from the same mind.
i also want to underline, that the picture is 100% pure photo, WITHOUT ANY PHOTOSHOPPING. i made it by unsing 30 secs exposure time and running around like crazy. stefan was a great help by flashing me with a torch everytime i was in position.

colour and space

for this assignment we met our teacher near the area of enschede, where the fireworks-explosion took place. many has changed since that, and a whole lot of new buildings with very up-to-date architecture has been built there. that is why very opposite styles of buildngs and people meet there, on the one hand the older and classically dutch houses, that have came through the accident unharmed and very new houses and constitutions. we should now take a series of 36 black&white photos there, illustrating colour (aswell "diversity") and space (meaning range). i tried to make that, completely documenting the progression of one street, from near the center along the area of the explosion till far out. i made a nice flash file for better presentation on the internet. see yourself what it became.
UPDATE: it seems like this swf doesn't work on the latest version of firefox. i have no idea why. if you can't see it but want to (it really does pay out) you should try another browser.

rozentheater

this assignment was fun. in amsterdam there is nice, little theater, probably more than just one, but one of them is called the "rozentheater". it is placed in a nice, little theater building, which the dutch state did not consider to be that nice, because they thought it was "dilapidated". so it had to be renovated and a large poster should be placed on it's front for the time this should take. we should now imagine we should take that photo, which also should explain the situatiuon a bit. that's what i did.

portrait

i took this photo for an assignment in which we should make a portrait of the one fellow student who was sitting right from us in the lesson that day. i sat next to anna. the portrait should not explicit show the person physically, moreover who it is. a sporty girl who likes shoes as you hopefully see.

this was a photo i originally took for myself, just for fun so to say. moreover it's part of a serie, but it's not yet finished. anyways, our teachers pleased us to make a selection of photos we considered to be best of our work to create make a presentation for the "open dag" of our academy from the selections of all students. i just put it in my selection, thinking my other photos would be better most probable. but this one chosen to be the only one printed from my selection, and that in the largest size printable at our academy (about 1,20m wide). looks great that size if you ask me.

DAna nanaA Batman!

yes, we really had a "genuine" bat in our house. flew in the bathroom somehow and i cought it and started a photo-session with it. nuts.
